The building is half the experience. Kahn's arched hall, the green glass tile vault and the line of tanks along both walls create a calm, cathedral-like space that no modern aquarium tries to copy. Photographers love it, and it rewards anyone who visits in the slow hours. Look back at the entrance on the way out: the Beaux Arts facade is carved with dolphins and a face of Neptune, often half hidden by ivy. When the city closed the aquarium in April 2005 amid a budget crisis, it held more than 4,000 fish, and Detroit voters backed reopening it in a nonbinding vote that summer, with 88 percent in favor — the start of the long volunteer effort that brought it back.
The fish are the other half. Look for the gars, lungfish and other air-breathers that come up to gulp at the surface — the collection is genuinely rare, and volunteers enjoy explaining it. The Great Lakes tanks put local fish in context, which is a nice prelude to a walk along the Detroit River shoreline.
Practicals: the aquarium is open Thursday through Sunday, with free admission and a suggested donation that supports the Conservancy. Belle Isle is a Michigan state park, so vehicles need a Recreation Passport. Visits rarely run past an hour, so build it into a longer island day: the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory next door, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum and the island beach are all close, and with the Shedd in Chicago or Newport Aquarium near Cincinnati on a Midwest aquarium road trip.
